How typing speed is calculated
The characters you typed correctly are divided by five to make words, and that count is divided by the time you took. Type 44 characters correctly in 30 seconds and it reads 18 WPM. Wrong characters are left out — otherwise pounding any key to fill the length would look fast. Pasting is not accepted, because a sentence you did not type has no typing time in it.
Why five characters make a word
It is the convention every typing test uses: five characters, spaces included, count as one word. English words differ in length, so counting real words would make a sentence of short words look faster than the same effort spent on long ones. Five characters is the average that keeps two rounds comparable.
What accuracy measures
Each position is compared with the sentence, one character at a time. Miss a character early and everything after it lands one position off — that is what you actually typed, so the positions are not realigned for you.
Why another program shows a different number
Programs count differently. Some divide every character you typed, mistakes included, which is gross WPM; this page counts only the correct ones, which is net WPM. Others subtract a penalty per error instead. The number here follows the rule written above, so comparing your own rounds on this page holds better than lining it up against another program.
Where the record is kept
Only your highest WPM is kept, in this browser's storage. It is not sent to a server and it is not ranked against anyone else. If storage is blocked, the best score is the only thing lost — the test itself still runs.
How is the share link built
Share puts the numbers into the address and builds a link. Opening that link fills the same card with those numbers, and the person who opened it can start their own round right away. Building a link sends nothing anywhere, it only writes an address.
The address is scrambled so the values are not readable, and changing one character stops the numbers from showing. That catches links garbled in transit or edited by hand. It does not confirm who measured the value, or when.
